Our Travels
We drove by this restaurant many times. Today we decided to try it. I think we may be tired of seafood for awhile. Mike got the chopped brisket sandwich and potato salad. I got the brisket nachos. It was really good. They ship food and sauce and I think we may order some to have back home. Small dining room and a large patio. Today was in the upper 70’s but very humid. We ate inside. Not Texas barbecue but Blue Oak is not bad.

We tried another neighborhood place called Neyow’s. It specializes in southern creole food. Mike got a shrimp po boy and I got crabcakes, dressing and hushpuppies. The place was packed with tables of large families. We could not hear each other.

After changing the battery, we needed to drive around a bit so we headed 14 miles to eat at Kenner Seafood one last time before we leave Tuesday. We both agree that the seafood is amazing and the servers great. I got the shrimp plate and Mike got red beans and rice with smoked sausage. Mike got a slice of carrot cake to go. It was good, but very small for what it cost.
I wish we had a good way to get the seafood home. They have an amazing assortment of crab, shrimp, oysters and fish in the market.

Mandina’s is neighborhood restaurant that has been run by the same family since 1932. We got there just in time. The line to be seated was very long about 10 minutes after we were seated and never stopped. Mike got the fried shrimp salad and I got chicken parmesan. Portions were huge. We have leftovers for tomorrow. I may be burning out on shrimp…MAYBE.

Weekends in the French Quarter have been chaos. The weekend before halloween is BONKERS. We got off our crazy streetcar ride to be surrounded by “witches”, full out “Barbie” bachelorette parties and people dressed in all sorts of costumes. Every store and restaurant has halloween decorations. Many balconies have decorations…some funny and some that really look evil.
We are not into card readings, haunted tours, voodoo or occult stuff….but if you are, NOLA is the place for you. Most people were having a good time. People watching is great here.
I did see the horse, “Old Man” from Pippi Longstocking. The music was amazing today.
We stopped for a late lunch. The original place we wanted to go was packed with only high tables to sit at and and we were not feeling like sitting on bar stools.
Toast was across the street. Mike got the King Cake french toast and I got the coconut cream stuffed french toast with bruleed pineapple, macadamia nuts and a lemon curd. Mike got sweet tea and I got hibiscus tea. Great service.

This museum was a real surprise. It only had two focuses but they were done very well. We used our Kimball Art Museum pass to get in free, but even and $10 a person it would be a good deal.
The building itself is fantastic. It had little to no crowd. It helped us to better understand what we learned during our city tour and tour of Mardi Gras World.

We used our Kimball Art Museum pass to visit the pharmacy museum. It was actually pretty interesting. The best part was the enclosed courtyard in the back.

On the way back to NOLA we stopped for lunch at Phil’s. It also says it is a “Yacht Club” but I saw no yachts. It was a very bright restaurant along the marina overlooking boats and a boardwalk covered in birds.
We had the shrimp plate lunch special and I got a side of baked mac and cheese to share. We were too full for dessert.

The drive back from the museum was frustrating. As we were passing Angelo Brocato’s, we saw a parking place and decided to stop. Mike chose a small apple crisp gelato, and I got a slice of tiramisu. We got a cannoli to go. No Cafe Du Monde for us today.
